·      The 7th Italian School on Magnetism follows a series of highly successful biyearly schools promoted by the Italian Association on Magnetism (AIMagn) and started in Pavia in 2012 (following editions: Parma – 2014, Milano – 2016 Torino – 2018, Roma 2020 and Milano 2023). 

This edition is titled “Magnetic nanomaterials” and will take place in Perugia (Italy), on October 20th – 24th, 2025, Hotel Giò and is organized by the Nanomagnetism group, GHOST Laboratory (Dipartimento di Fisica e Geologia, University of Perugia and CNR Istituto Officina dei Materiali). 

The School is addressed to Italian and foreign graduate and PhD students, as well as to post-doc and young researchers

Following the tradition of the School, the 7th edition will provide training in the basic principles of magnetism and magnetics through a series of fundamental lectures. Emphasis will be also put on the latest insights into the development of magnetic nanomaterials and their applications, with lectures focusing on specific topics.

·       We are one year away from the 1st International Symposium on Three-Dimensional Nanomagnetism (3DMAG 2026), taking place in Vienna from July 13-17, 2026.

·         We are pleased to announce to the AIMagn community a PhD opening in Physics at Politecnico di Milano:

“Development of Ultralow-Power Transistors Exploiting Ferroic Materials.”

The three-year position, starting on November 1st, 2025, is sponsored by the Tech Europe Foundation (TEF). It will be awarded to a candidate with outstanding qualifications, such as an excellent academic record and a demonstrated interest or experience (e.g., during the Master’s thesis) in #spintronics, #nanoelectronics, or related #research. The net salary is €1800/month.

The project aims to increase the energy efficiency and speed of state-of-the-art transistors by leveraging non-volatile ferroic materials, with a view to advanced applications such as neuromorphic computing and memory-in-logic devices. The PhD student will also benefit from mentorship by TEF, with specific attention to intellectual property aspects.

·      PhD position funded by AEI agency (Spanish Government)

TOPIC: Magneto-semiconductor nanomaterials for photothermal and sonodynamic therapies.

A PhD position is available at the ‘Laboratory of Nanostructured and Nanocomposite Materials -LM2N’ (https://www.lm2n-ub.com/) of the University of Barcelona (UB).

The position is in the framework of the project “Design of near infrared- & ultrasound- responsive inorganic nano-objects for powerful therapeutic technologies (TheraNIR-US)”. This is a very multidisciplinary project which will be developed in close collaboration with outstanding researchers from IMB-CNM-CSIC and Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) and CNRS (Paris).

The project mainly tackles the synthesis of magneto-semiconductor hybrid nanomaterials with good (i) optical absorption at the NIR-II region and (ii) sonochemical responses for photothermal and sonodynamic therapies, respectively.

Duration: 4 years funded through an FPI Fellowship.

Starting period: February 2026. 

Main Tasks and Responsibilities of the candidate:

               Synthesis of the magnetic and semiconductor nanomaterials.

Structural and physico-chemical characterization.

Biofunctionalization of the nanomaterials

Evaluation of the photothermal and sonochemical properties

In-vitro experiments. 

Requirements for a stronger application:

Chemistry or Materials/Nano Science degree

Master + Batchelor degrees (300 ETCS in total) or Batchelor degree (300 ETCS in total)

Non-European citizens currently outside the European Union are not eligible due to the urgent need

for incorporation

Knowledge in nanomaterials and nanoscience

Knowledge on characterization techniques (XRD, TEM, SEM, UV-Vis, magnetism)

Outstanding CV and, more importantly, a high degree of ambition and motivation, and with good

personal qualities to work in our Team. Good level in English.

The aim of the workshop is to show how magnetism can be a fun game for children, a trick often used by magicians, but also an indispensable invisible tool with countless applications in many areas of modern life.

Magnetic materials are often hidden inside technological objects—sometimes without us even realizing it—such as in rotation sensors used in smartphones.

The workshop uses simple educational materials to present a variety of experiments that demonstrate and explore magnetic phenomena.
